Assisting Tornadoes Victims of Central & Western Massachusetts

This week Massachusetts experienced devastating deadly tornadoes that not only killed, but have injured hundreds and left countless people homeless. Please join in the relief efforts to help these people rebuild there lives.

Below you will find volunteer information I received from my company based in central Massachusetts. If you cannot volunteer, please consider donating or getting in touch with organizations helping in the relief efforts:

  • Donate to the American Red Cross of Central and Western Massachusetts:
People can donate online at http://redcross.org or by phone: 1-800-RED-CROSS. Those who wish to donate can also text "REDCROSS" to 90999 to send $10 to the organization. The charge will appears on the user's cellphone bill.

The following volunteer information was given to my co-workers and me by my company:

People interested in volunteering their time to assist with disaster relief efforts are encouraged to pull together any sized group of volunteers (due to the influx of calls they are receiving, they prefer groups to individuals).   Once a group is coordinated, you should call the Volunteer Coordinator's Office at the American Red Cross 508-595-3730. The office is compiling a list of people who are willing to volunteer in the upcoming days and weeks.

Be prepared to provide the following when you make the call:

  1. Name of Volunteer
  2. Town of Residency
  3. Phone #
  4. Any certifications you or your group members may have (i.e. licensed EMT, CPR, etc.)

Since the American Red Cross is still in the direct aftermath of the disaster, many organizations are still trying to figure out how to best serve those affected. Therefore, some volunteer opportunities may not be available until next week or the week after as needs become more apparent.

Additional volunteer resources include dialing the United Way's help line 2-1-1 (dialed like 4-1-1 or 9-1-1 on your phone) or checking www.volunteermatch.org.
